Dear GLF-CEM participant, Salvador welcomes you!

Also known as the land of joy, Salvador is the capital of Bahia, located in northeast Brazil. It has a wide range of tourist attractions, from beaches to historic districts, as well as excellent pubs and restaurants with typical local and regional cuisine. In the following, you will find some recommendations for tourist attractions, restaurants, and travel agencies (for city tours). If you need additional help, please contact us.

Tourist attractions

Pelourinho

Cobblestone streets wind past open-air caipirinha bars, Afro-Bahian souvenir stores, and squares filled with musicians and dancers in historic Pelourinho. Colonial landmarks include Igreja e Convento de São Francisco and Catedral Basílica de Salvador, with their Portuguese tiles and intricate, gold-plated carvings. The Casa do Carnaval shows multimedia exhibits and costumed mannequins from the iconic street party.

Barra Lighthouse

Part of Santo Antônio da Barra Fort, Barra Lighthouse is a fantastic place for pictures and a stay to enjoy the sunset. It is where one of the traditional circuits of Salvador’s carnival begins (Barra-Ondina). Beyond its beauty, this fortification houses the Nautical Museum of Bahia, which has a historical collection formed by objects from different eras.

Lacerda Elevator and Mercado Modelo

The Lacerda Elevator is an urban public elevator connecting the lower city to the upper city. Mercado Modelo is a popular market featuring shops selling a variety of arts, crafts, and souvenirs. The view next to the elevator from the upper city is one of Salvador’s postcards.

Basilica of Senhor do Bonfim

Stately 18th-century church located on a hill. It is where the famous regional religious festival, called Lavagem do Bonfim (The washing of the Bomfin's church), takes place.
